As leaders, we often treat time like a renewable energy source. We think, “I’ll just work an hour later,” or “I’ll catch up with the team next week.” But every minute you spend on “Shadow Work”—the scheduling, the manual documentation, the inbox triage—is a minute you’ve stolen from a teammate who needs your mentorship.
AI isn’t about doing more work. It’s about reclaiming the time required to be human.
Here is how I’m using AI to “harvest” better relationships and lift my team (my network, peers, and clients) up:
1. Trading Algorithms for Presence 🤝 I let AI (like Motion or Reclaim) handle my calendar. By automating the logistics, I show up to 1-on-1s without the “rushed” energy of someone who just spent 20 minutes fighting their inbox.
- The Shift: You move from being a “Manager” to being a “Coach.”
2. Decentralizing Knowledge 💡 When I use Scribe or Sana to turn my expertise into instant training modules, I’m not just saving myself time. I’m empowering my team to solve their own problems without waiting for “permission” or “access.”
- The Shift: You move from being a “Bottleneck” to being an “Enabler.”
3. Deep Listening, Not Just Hearing 🎧 By using AI transcription (like Otter.ai), I can keep my eyes on my team, not my notes. I can see the hesitation in their eyes or the excitement in their gestures.
- The Shift: You move from “Recording Data” to “Validating People.”
The Bottom Line: Your team doesn’t need you to be the best administrator in the company. They need you to be the best mentor, the best listener, and the best advocate.
AI gives you back the hours. What you do with them is what defines your leadership.
