The “Zero-Base” Leadership Creed
Carry this as a mental (or physical) manifesto to remind yourself that your status is earned, never owned.
- The Reset: My reputation is a ghost; my character is the living presence. I start every day with a virtue balance of zero.
- The Standard: Past successes do not buy future indulgences. A “great” deed yesterday does not excuse a “lesser” version of myself today.
- The Focus: I will not be a prisoner of my history or a slave to my ambition. I will make the right decision for the current moment, regardless of the cost to my ego or the promise of a prize.
- The Service: I do not stand above the work; I am the steward of the work. If it needs to be done, it is my job.
The Daily Audit: 5 Questions for Mastery
Greatness is maintained in the “boring” moments of self-reflection. Ask yourself these five questions every evening to ensure you aren’t coasting on yesterday’s equity.
1. The “Equity” Check
- “Did I use my position or past achievements today to avoid a difficult conversation or justify a shortcut?”
- Goal: To catch “moral licensing” before it becomes a habit.
2. The “Presence” Check
- “Was I leading the person in front of me, or was I leading a memory of them (past) or a projection of what I want from them (future)?”
- Goal: To ensure your feedback and empathy are grounded in current reality.
3. The “Invisible” Task
- “What is one ‘small’ thing I did today that provided value but offered no public credit or reward?”
- Goal: To decouple your actions from the need for external validation.
4. The “Temptation” Check
- “Did I make any decisions today based on how they would look on a resume rather than how they would affect the mission?”
- Goal: To filter out the “future rewards” that cloud judgment.
5. The “Course Correction”
- “If I were to be replaced tomorrow by a leader 10x better than me, what is the first thing they would change about my current behavior?”
- Goal: To maintain the “Janitor” mentality and stay humble.
